A Guest's Guide to Cape May

Cape May: The Way Summer Used to Feel

America's oldest seaside resort, a National Historic Landmark, and the most timeless town on the Jersey Shore.

Cape May sits at the very southern tip of New Jersey, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Delaware Bay. It is the oldest seaside resort in the United States, welcoming summer visitors since the mid-1700s, and the entire city is a designated National Historic Landmark.

What sets Cape May apart from every other Jersey Shore town is its architecture. After a great fire in 1878, the town was rebuilt at the height of the Victorian era, leaving behind one of the largest collections of Victorian buildings in the country... more than 600 gingerbread homes with wraparound porches, gables, turrets and ornate trim. Only San Francisco has more. Strolling the gas-lamp streets feels less like the shore and more like stepping into another century.

What to do

A week is barely enough.

The Beach

Cape May's clean, gently sloping beaches are a one-block walk from both homes. Mornings are for shelling and the famous "Cape May diamonds"; afternoons for umbrellas and the surf.

The Washington Street Mall

A three-block pedestrian promenade of independent shops, ice cream, fudge and sidewalk cafes in the heart of the historic district.

Victorian House Tours

Tour the Emlen Physick Estate, an 1879 Victorian mansion, or take a guided trolley through the historic district to hear the stories behind the gingerbread.

Cape May Lighthouse

Climb the 1859 lighthouse at Cape May Point State Park for sweeping views, then explore the trails, dunes and WWII bunker on the beach.

Sunset at Sunset Beach

Watch the daily flag-lowering ceremony and the sunset over the Delaware Bay, with the concrete ship S.S. Atlantus just offshore.

Dining & Wine

Cape May has become a genuine food town... fresh seafood, farm-to-table restaurants, and a growing cluster of nearby wineries and a brewery.

Getting here

Cape May is at the southern end of the Garden State Parkway (Exit 0). It is roughly a 2-hour drive from Philadelphia, about 2.5 hours from New York City, and a little over 3 hours from Washington, D.C. The Cape May–Lewes Ferry connects the town to Delaware across the bay.

When to visit

Peak season runs late June through August, when the beaches and restaurants are liveliest. June and September offer warm water with smaller crowds, and Cape May\'s shoulder seasons, with Victorian Christmas, fall festivals and spring birding, give the town a quieter, romantic feel. Both homes book Saturday-to-Saturday weeks in summer and flexible nightly stays off-season.
